Good IELTS paraphrasing changes language while preserving meaning. It does not replace every word with a rare synonym. The official public descriptors connect flexible vocabulary with precision, appropriacy, and the ability to paraphrase, so a reformulation that changes some to all is not successful merely because it sounds formal.
The exercises below are original. Each closed item has one answer fixed by scope or logic; open items include a model rather than a mandatory script. This page is the hands-on companion to Lyra Practice's IELTS paraphrasing vocabulary guide: the guide teaches the principles, while this workout supplies new decisions and answer checks. 1. Preserve quantity and certainty
Choose the closer paraphrase.
- Many younger adults rent because buying is unaffordable.
- A. All young people are forced to rent.
- B. High purchase costs lead many younger adults to rent.
- The change may reduce waiting times.
- A. The change could shorten waits.
- B. The change will remove delays.
- Car use fell gradually over the period.
- A. Car use declined steadily across the period.
- B. Car use collapsed immediately.
- Only a small proportion worked from home.
- A. Remote workers formed a minority.
- B. Most people worked remotely.
Answers: 1 B preserves many and the cause. 2 A preserves possibility. 3 A preserves pace. 4 A preserves the small share.
2. Change the structure, not the fact
Rewrite each sentence using the cue.
- The city expanded the cycle network, so short car journeys decreased. (Following...)
- People value local parks because they provide accessible recreation. (One reason...)
- The library extended its hours after students requested more evening access. (In response to...)
- Although the course is demanding, its practical focus appeals to me. (What appeals...)
Model answers:
- Following the expansion of the cycle network, short car journeys decreased.
- One reason people value local parks is that they provide accessible recreation.
- In response to students' requests for more evening access, the library extended its hours.
- What appeals to me is the course's practical focus, despite its demanding workload.
The noun forms expansion and requests are grammatical, and no model invents a new cause or degree.
3. Repair unsafe synonym swaps
Each revision changes the source meaning. Replace the bold wording.
- Source: The result was surprising. Revision: The result was shocking and disastrous.
- Source: The policy affected several districts. Revision: The policy transformed the entire city.
- Source: Participants often mentioned cost. Revision: Participants always complained about price.
- Source: The figures suggest a connection. Revision: The figures prove causation.
Answers: 1 unexpected/surprising; no disaster is stated. 2 affected several districts; neither transformation nor citywide scope is supported. 3 often mentioned cost; complained adds attitude and always changes frequency. 4 indicate/suggest an association; the source does not establish cause.
Understanding is only the first step.
Lyra Practice helps you retrieve and use high-value workplace expressions in realistic situations until they feel natural.

Read the question, then answer without repeating its key noun.
- What is one benefit of public libraries? Avoid benefit.
- Why do some people dislike long commutes? Avoid dislike.
- Is it important to preserve historic buildings? Avoid important.
Possible answers:
- One advantage is that residents can access books and quiet study space without paying each time.
- Some people find lengthy travel frustrating because it reduces the time available for family or rest.
- Yes. Protecting historic buildings matters because they provide visible links to a community's past.
The paraphrase occurs inside a direct answer. It is not a memorized introduction that delays the response.
5. Writing Task 1 meaning control
Paraphrase the data statement exactly.
Bus journeys rose from 40 million in 2010 to 52 million in 2020, while rail journeys stayed close to 30 million.
Which is accurate?
- A. Bus use increased by 12 million, whereas rail use remained broadly stable at about 30 million.
- B. Public transport use soared universally, and rail travel was unchanged at exactly 30 million.
- C. Bus travel became the majority form of transport while trains declined.
Answer: A. It preserves the values and contrast. B exaggerates the movement and turns an approximate value into an exact one. C invents a share and a decline.
6. Build two valid versions
Source:
Flexible schedules can improve access for employees with caring responsibilities, but they may complicate team coordination.
Formal model: Flexible working hours may make employment more accessible to employees with caregiving responsibilities; however, coordinating a team can become more difficult.
Spoken model: Flexible hours can make work easier to manage if you care for someone, although arranging things with the whole team might be harder.
Both preserve the benefit, the affected group, the contrast, and the uncertainty. Their register differs because natural Speaking language need not imitate an essay.
Use a four-point check on your own paraphrases: same people or things, same quantity, same certainty, and same cause or contrast. If any point changes, revise before searching for a more impressive synonym.
For the next round, choose the relevant Speaking or Writing route from the IELTS vocabulary practice hub and apply the same four-point check to a fresh task context.
